Welcome to IGN's walkthrough for Metroid Dread. This page features information on your second exploration of the Artaria region, including how to redirect the thermal flow, find the Varia Suit, and return to the red teleportal.
Taking the Red Teleportal from the Cataris Zone will lead you to a familiar environment back in Artaria, but your new Morph Ball ability has opened new pathways for you.

Redirect the Thermal Flow
Video Guide: Getting the Varia Suit
Whether you took the elevator or the Red Teleportal to Artaria, your mission will be the same. However, for the purpose of this walkthrough, we’ve gone with the Red Teleportal, which leads to the left side of the EMMI Zone right above a sunken room.
Missile Tank Upgrade: As you drop down into the waters below the Red Teleportal, you can find a Missile Tank in a narrow vent in the water, just hop in from the left side.
Energy Part Tank Upgrade: Just to the left of the nearby Save Station is the path you need to take, and conveniently it has an Energy Part right in your path using your Morph Ball.
Taking your Morph Ball up the hole at the top of the long room, you’ll enter a series of tunnels crawling with centipede creatures. You can crouch out of the Morph Ball to shoot them and open a straight path to the other side, or you can carefully maneuver yourself along the longer trail.
This will lead to the rooms above the Red Teleportal you entered the area from, so continue moving upwards and watch for the rock creature on the left as you find a room with a door sealed with a green shield, and another door above you can actually access.

Escape the Thermal Room
You’ll find yourself in a large room with a door leading to a magma chamber (avoid it), and an interactive device to access a new Thermal Power vent. However, things aren’t going to go down as planned, as it triggers a massive series of explosions - meaning you need to get out of here fast. The floors below you will start heating up, and you don’t want to melt!
When the platform to the left moves upward, follow it upwards until debris falls down to trigger flame vents ahead of you. Note the narrow hole below you and blast an opening to crawl through to the other side.
The platform to the left will continue to move up, so slide past it and under the flame vent to the far left side and start climbing. When you reach the top of the magnetic rail, aim your blaster at the top right wall to create a path to squeeze through. Now keep moving right and slide under flame vents to reach the other side of the room and climb to the next platform.
Trying to move left will only trigger more explosions, falling debris, and flame vents, so backtrack and shoot out some debris above to create a hole to crawl through, then move left dodging more flame vents as they appear. Slide through the opening on the left to escape the heated room.
Now that you’ve escaped, you can move up and blast the shield door with a Missile to finally get your hands on the Varia Suit - allowing you to survive in superheated rooms (but not extended dips in magma pools!)
Return to the Red Teleportal

Now that you can survive hot rooms, let’s put it to the test. Head out through the room on the right into a fiery area you can now move around in without worry of dying, and drop down to the lower level by shooting the bottom right floor.
Missile+ Tank Upgrade: It’s important to note that the Varia Suit does not protect you from magma, and you’ll take increasing damage the longer you’re in it. However, since the nearby Missile+ Tank is only a few feet away, you can dive in, turn into a morph ball, and quickly snatch it as long as you have at least an extra energy tank or two.
Re-enter the room you had to escape from earlier, to find it boiling hot but otherwise free of danger. You can make your way down to the bottom, but will be unable to leave the way you came in, so head right past the Thermal Valve controls that started this mess.
Take out the winged creatures in the next room with some well-timed counters, then drop down and avoid the magma pits to head left into a pit that will take you back down to the Red Teleportal.
While there are a few new Missile Tanks you can find in Artaria thanks to your new suit, falling debris has blocked your way down from the teleportal, so instead, head back to Cataris to find a new beam weapon guarded by a deadly foe.
