Saturday college football scores
Ohio State 21, Notre Dame 10. Not quite the offense we expected from the Buckeyes, especially with lead receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba nursing a new injury, but OSU's defense locked down the Irish attack and C.J. Stroud led two crucial second half scoring drives to start the Bucks off 1-0.
Georgia 49, Oregon 3. A massacre. College football's defending national champs scored TDs on their first 7 possessions and never let the Ducks in the end zone. Georgia hasn't missed a step since winning it all in 2021, putting up 439 yards in the air and wreaking havoc after the catch.
Florida 29, Utah 26. A tough, hard-nosed, back and forth game in the Swamp won by a pair of TD possessions led by Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson in response to a pair of long Utah scoring drives. Florida intercepted Cam Rising on the Utes' last chance near the goal line in a statement debut for head coach Billy Napier.
Arkansas 31, Cincinnati 24. Too many mistakes from Cincinnati, which was in scoring position, but kept going the wrong way, including on a crucial 4th quarter play that ended in a turnover and let the Hogs take a two-score lead. Cincy played well enough defense for long enough, but needs to get a lot more accurate passing the ball deep and cut down on the gaffes.
USC 66, Rice 14. A good first showing not just for the Trojans' offense, which finished with 538 total yards and 2 TD plays between Caleb Williams and Jordan Addison, but a stellar defensive showing that included 3 pick-sixes.
NC State 21, East Carolina 20. This one was in ECU's grasp after getting one goal line stand on defense and forcing a fumble from the Wolfpack on the 1 yard line, but the would-be game-tying extra point went wide, and so did the potential winning field goal as time expired. Ouch.
Oklahoma 45, UTEP 13. A predictably great first defensive outing for Brent Venables' club, which held the Miners to 31 yards rushing, racked up 6 sacks, and 10 quarterback hurries, holding UTEP to just 3 second half points. Dillon Gabriel passed for 2 TDs and ran for a third.
Michigan 51, Colorado State 7. Both quarterbacks got in on the action for the Wolverines, who piled up 234 yards and 4 TDs on the ground, including J.J. McCarthy's 20 yard scoring run, a preview of what's to come next week. And maybe the rest of the season.
North Carolina 63, App State 61. Okay, the Tar Heels defense is in trouble. App State scored sixTDs and 40 points overall in the 4th quarter along in a game it could have won twice. Drake Maye looks like the real deal at QB but Gene Chizik needs to go back to the drawing board on defense after just 1 game.
Thursday CFB scores
Pittsburgh 38, West Virginia 31. J.T. Daniels led two straight TD drives to give the Mountaineers a 7 point lead late, but Kedon Slovis connected with Israel Abanikanda on a stunning 24 yard scoring play and M.J. Devonshire picked off Daniels on an eventual pick six off a deflected pass to flip the Backyard Brawl back in Pitt's favor for good. All after WVU elected to punt on 4th and 1 from the Pittsburgh 48.
Penn State 35, Purdue 31. Redemption for Sean Clifford after he threw an ugly pick six that gave Purdue the late lead, but the Boilers couldn't run the ball late, allowing Clifford to lead the 80 yard drive and the game-winner with under a minute left to win a game that had over 800 combined yards.
Oklahoma State 58, Central Michigan 44. Spencer Sanders accounted for 5 all purpose TDs in the first half as the Cowboys built up an early 44-15 lead. Then the Chippewas mounted a major comeback to put a scare into the Pokes' defense, which doesn't look its old self since Jim Knowles left.
Tennessee 59, Ball State 10. 23 seconds was all the Vols needed to score their first TD and Hendon Hooker handled the rest from there, piling up 570 yards and opening up a 45-0 lead while racking up 218 rushing yards.
