Sono passati tredici anni da quando un meteorite si schiantò drammaticamente sul distretto di Akaishi, a Tokyo. Le vittime furono innumerevoli; ma innumerevoli furono anche i dispersi, persone sparite nel nulla senza lasciare alcuna traccia. Da allora il cielo è costantemente ricoperto da nubi e da una nebbia tendente al rossastro, e un muro di contenimento è stato costruito intorno al cratere, ufficialmente per contenere le radiazioni. Nonostante gli immani sforzi per la bonifica del territorio colpito dal cataclisma, sempre più spesso si ripetono situazioni di allarme, in cui i cittadini sono invitati a chiudersi in casa a causa di fughe radioattive… o almeno, questa è la giustificazione ufficiale fornita dal governo; ma voci insistenti sussurrano che ci sia qualcos’altro… qualcosa di molto più pericoloso delle radiazioni. E se il confine che divide la terra dagl’inferi si fosse incrinato? E se i dannati che hanno venduto l’anima al sovrano degl’inferi cominciassero ad aggirarsi nel nostro mondo sotto la forma di brutali mostri? E se… e se qualcuno avesse invece dagl’inferi fatto ritorno, riuscendo a preservare la propria umanità?
