Russell Crowe is one of the most successful and recognizable movie stars of the 21st century, and certain films stand out as his best. Born in 1964, Crowe was actively performing for over a decade before his big break. Starting his career in New Zealand and Australia, Crowe began with stage performances and TV parts before landing his first film role in 1990. He began working in North America in the '90s before L.A. Confidential launched him into international fame, kicking off nearly a decade of critically acclaimed movies and performances.
While he hasn't had as much success in recent years, Crowe's movies have generated over $5 billion at the box office, making him a coveted star. His most remarkable stretch came between 1997 and 2001, when he rose to fame and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor three years in a row (1999, 2000, and 2001). Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott collaborated on five films, and American Gangster is one of their best. The 2007 film primarily focuses on Denzel Washington's Frank Lucas, the film's star. In his supporting role, Crowe is exciting to follow as Detective Richie Roberts, who's determined to end Frank Lucas' crime empire. It's certainly not Crowe's most outstanding performance, but it's an impressive crime movie, and he's solid behind Denzel Washington.
American Gangster didn't receive the award or critical acclaim it likely sought, but the film boasts an 89% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, which outweighs its critical score. For crime movie lovers, Scott's epic may not have the same acclaim as crime biopics like Goodfellas, but it's still a gripping story and one of the most entertaining in its genre. American Gangster was so evocative that it inspired Jay-Z to make an album of the same name, and the artist praised the moral complexities of cops and criminals explored in the film (via Charlie Rose).

Russell Crowe isn't known for his comedy work, but he's absolutely hilarious in The Nice Guys. Much of the 2016 film's success can be attributed to the exceptional chemistry between Crowe and co-star Ryan Gosling, who have excellent comedic timing working with dry humor. Since its release, audiences have been calling for The Nice Guys 2, with the film trending on Twitter as recently as September 2023, with movie fans showing how passionately they want to see more. The mediocre box office run certainly doesn't do justice to how beloved the comedy is.

2 Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)
Directed by Peter Weir
Russell Crowe has had his fair share of historical films, but none is as visually impressive as Peter Weir's Master and Commander. Russell Crowe with a long blonde ponytail may not sound ideal on paper, but he's fantastic as the charming Captain Jack Aubrey, with a commanding, authoritative performance that feels genuine as a naval leader. The naval premise is rare in the historical genre, allowing Master and Commander to be a truly unique cinematic experience with mind-blowing cinematography and a devotion to its authentic portrayal of historic maritime life.
